June 7th, 1942: Edward Hopper completes his best known painting, the seminal Nighthawks. When asked by a Chicago Tribute reporter about the philosophical meaning behind the diner having no clearly visible exits Hopper responded, “Shit. Fuck. I did it again. Goddamnit. Fuck. Not again. I did it again. Shit.” and slammed his hat on his leg.

Rivaini Naming Traditions

defira85:

(Obvious disclaimer, this is all my own musing and is based on a vague mix of several east African cultural traditions twisted in with what little we know about Rivaini culture so far)

Rivaini people have multiple names- they have three names in their public name, with the first being their common name, the second being the name of their mother and the third being the name of their maternal grandmother. Although the concept of surnames has slowly seeped in from influences outside of Rivaini (especially amongst the nobility) for the most part the common folk of Rivain do not acknowledge them formally. At the most, a family group will be referred to as X Family (ie Dama Family) and an individual with be introduced as ABC of X Family rather than A X

For example, outside of Rivain, Corinne is referred to as Corinne Trevelyan whereas in Rivain she is referred to as Corinne Nadifa Ishaaro of Dama Family, or just Corinne Nadifa Ishaaro. This has led to confusion as to her name, leading some to believe she is Corinne Dama.

Their common name is usually some reflection of the circumstances of their birth (not always, but often). They might be named for the alignment of the stars or the day of the week or an emotion associated with the day. Corinne’s name literally means ‘girl-child’ so it’s not particularly ominous at all.

Additionally, Rivaini believe that names have power and it is important for each individual to know their own name as it is written on their soul. This is referred to as your true name, or private name, and it is an important social marker in Rivaini society. It is a huge social faux pas to ask for someone’s private name unless you are remarkably close, and it’s not uncommon for husbands and wives to be unaware of their spouse’s private name. More than that, to share someone’s name without their consent is one of the greatest betrayals and is a valid defence for murder.

Learning your private name is a joyful occasion, and is celebrated amongst family and friends because it is a sign of knowing one’s self. Some learn their name at a very young age, and some only come into the knowledge later in life. Rivaini culture in general is very accepting of trans and non binary individuals, as it supports the notion of knowing yourself. It is entirely possible to go through life without a private name- these individuals are feared and respected, and are assumed to be spirits come back from the beyond. These ‘old souls’ have already learned their name in a past life, and have no need for a second.

Private names are never elaborate, and are usually just an amalgamation and shortening of one’s common names. Corinne’s, for example, is a shortening of her first name (Rin) and then an amalgamation of her birth family name and her mother plus grandmother’s name (N from Nadifa and I from Ishaaro, then yan from Trevalyan to make Niyan) for her private name to be Rin Niyan. Corinne learns her name at the age of twelve, not long after she loses her temper at her biological sisters in the forest- Nadifa, afraid of her susceptibility to demons, begins to attempt a more structured learning environment for her instead of letting her run free, and in turn Corinne’s private name comes to her.

It is also acceptable for Rivaini to change their common name, if they so choose- it is another aspect of knowing one’s self, and so sometimes it comes to pass that the name that was suitable in childhood is not suitable in adulthood, and it is an adult’s right to name themselves. Isabela, for example, left behind the name Naishe as is her right.

There are six people who know Corinne’s true name- Nadifa (her mother), Benan (her father), Ishaaro (her grandmother), Cullen, Solas and Riana (her previous Guardian who had to step down after being gravely injured in the explosion at Haven).
